Elizabeth Wu's Talk
The SWAN Hypothesis Manager in the Biomedical Knowledge Ecosystem
Abstract
SWAN is a project to develop effective specialist knowledge bases for the Alzheimer Disease research community, using the energy and self-organization of that community enabled by Semantic Web technology.
Some pointers
In the following, some projects/resources mentioned in the various talks:
- BIORDF: Build an integrated data environment using RDF and OWL for neuroscience in order to help glean new scientific insights.
- Ontology Task Force:The mission of the Ontology Task Force is to facilitate creation, evaluation and maintenance of "core vocabularies and ontologies to support cross-community data integration and collaborative efforts.”
- Regulated Clinical Research Information Management (RCRIM): This committee supports the HL7 mission to create and promote its standards by developing standards to improve or enhance information management during research and regulatory evaluation of the safety and efficacy of therapeutic products or procedures worldwide.
- Adaptable Clinical Protocols and Pathways (ACPP)
- AlzPharm: AlzPharm is a demonstration of how to use the semantic web (Oracle/RDF) technology to integrate drug and publication information related to the Alzheimer's Disease. Such information is stored in two separate data sources (SenseLab/BrainPharm and SWAN/AlzForum).
- BioPAX: BioPAX is a collaborative effort to create a data exchange format for biological pathway data.
- Tripcom: Triple Space computing establishes the mechanism to publish communication data according to the Web paradigm of 'persistently publish and read' and in this way TripCom brings machine-to-machine Web Service communication to the Web in its real sense: 'Web' Services.
- Neuroscience Semantic Web:This site is intended to demonstrate the application of semantic web technologies in neuroscience data integration area.
- Dolce Ontology: a Descriptive Ontology for Linguistic and Cognitive Engineering.
- Neuroscientific: Building a scalable and userfriendly platform for the discourse between people from all disciplines that are part of the multidisciplinary field of neuroscience, including not only biology and medicine but also informatics, philosophy, sociology and others...
- Simple Knowledge Organisation System Ontology (SKOS): SKOS is an area of work developing specifications and standards to support the use of knowledge organisation systems (KOS) such as thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading lists, taxonomies, other types of controlled vocabulary, and perhaps also terminologies and glossaries, within the framework of the Semantic Web.
- Taverna Workflow: The Taverna project aims to provide a language and software tools to facilitate easy use of workflow and distributed compute technology within the eScience community.
- myExperiment: myExperiment is a collaborative platform for life scientists to manage, share and find Taverna workflows.
- European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI):
Welcome to the EBI

European Bioinformatics InstituteThe European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is a non-profit academic organisation that forms part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).
- Science Commons: Science Commons serves the advancement of science by removing unnecessary legal and technical barriers to scientific collaboration and innovation.
- Gene Ontology: The Gene Ontology project provides a controlled vocabulary to describe gene and gene product attributes in any organism.
- ClaiMaker & ClaimFinder: ClaiMaker is a web-based system for individuals or distributed communities to publish and contest ideas and arguments, as is required in contested domains such as research literatures, intelligence analysis, or public debate.
- Scholarly Ontologies Project: The ScholOnto Project is a 3 year effort (2001-2004) to build and deploy a prototype infrastructure for making scholarly claims about the significance of research documents.
- Time Ontology: Time Ontology in OWL
